This Mortal Coil is not a band in the traditional sense of the word--it
is rather a concept of 4AD head Ivo Watts-Russell, where many different
artists from the label would work together on both original songs and new
interpretations of his favourites. The first release It'll End In Tears
found Elisabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie with a hit of Tim Buckley's "Song
To The Siren", but many other mixes and matches happen here. Simon Raymonde
worked more on their double-length album Filigree & Shadow. Drenched for
the most part in string arrangements, this album shows more of This Mortal
Coil's originality and less cover versions--consequently it is more interesting
an album to listen to what happens when different artists collaborate.
Their most recent album, 91's Blood continued the TMC tradition. It is
difficult to say whether the project will continue given 4AD's progression
from its goth-rock roots to more guitar-driven rock styles.

and stepsister Tanya Donelly when both were only 14, Throwing Muses became
marked by Hersh's struggle with a mood disorder called bipolarity, out
of which came very distracted lyric imagery and complex songs that threw
away the mainstream's need for the three-chord formula--also why TM has
been denied success for such a long time. Their first eponymous release
in 1986 showed Hersh going from whispers to screams in what could only
be musical emotion. Through the EP Chains Changed and The Fat Skier, TM
almost began to sound like grunge-meets-western, but still inescapable
by Hersh's draining surges of emotion. House Tornado turned around and
recreated Throwing Muses at its most complex. 1988 saw the release of
the more serene Hunkpapa and their first minor hit in "Dizzy". 1990 saw
an almost conventional TM release The Real Ramona which was considered
somewhat lukewarm with Hersh's lyrics buried in a more polished musical
background. After this album, Donelly left Throwing Muses to form
Belly
and Throwing Muses nearly broke up, later reforming as a duo to provide
the best two albums in TM's repertoire-- Red Heaven in 1991 and University
at the beginning of 1995. Hersh's lyrics are not so
distracted and shattering, and the music (mostly performed live in the
studio) consequently has a much more powerful pull.
