With a lineup like Kim Deal, ex-
Pixies
bassist, Tanya Donelly, then of
Throwing Muses
, and Josephine Wiggs from the British band Perfect Disaster, it's little
surprise that the press initially treated The Breeders as a one-off supergroup.
Their first album Pod was hard to miss, featuring Kim Deal's cigarette-stained
voice and odd lyric topics ("Oh!" is about a squashed bug, "Hellbound"
is about an abortion that survived, etc.), the searing guitar work of Donelly.
The press didn't give it enough credit, and the followup EP Safari barely
got noticed, even though Kim's twin sister Kelly had stepped in. Afterwards,
Donelly stepped aside to form her own outfit
Belly
, and the solid lineup of the Deal twins, Wiggs and new drummer Jim MacPherson
recorded Last Splash, which came on the heels of the self-destruction of
the Pixies. More accessible musically but still full of Deal's twisted
sentiments, once you hear this album you won't be
able to resist going back to it. If you like The Breeders, act quickly
and get their most recent release, the limited edition 10" single "Head
To Toe", and watch out for Kim Deal's upcoming solo release Pacer.
