It's inescapable--you will either love this San Francisco band for their
slow, atmospheric, honest music or you will hate them for their hushed,
nervous tones. Red House Painters is essentially the mind of Mark Kozelek,
who writes startlingly honest lyrics for RHP's serene backdrop. Their
debut EP Down Colorful Hill, released in 1992, started with the bare
whisper "So it's not/Loaded stadiums or ballparks" and went on to express
all the things that make depression so wonderful--loneliness, growing old,
failed relationships and so on. This was refined on the two 1993 releases
called Red House Painters (both recorded at the same time but divided for
reasons of context). This time the soul-searching tunes were split up
with some quirky, often funny tracks like "Mistress" or their cover version
of the Simon & Garfunkel song "I Am A Rock". Their most recent album Ocean
Beach adds a cello and a little more of an edge to their sound.
