Pale Saints
Following a shoegazer trend (and considered one of the seminal "shoegazer" bands in England), Pale Saints started off on a very interesting foot with The Comforts Of Madness in 1990. It's all there--chiming guitars, plodding bass lines and the barely understandable voice of Ian Masters, who comes across a choirboy in his light style. Madness spanned 11 songs and 40 minutes, with each song forming out of a nebulous mass of sounds, hanging on for about 3 minutes and then dissolving again into the next. Two EP's followed this and culminated in the release In Ribbons which put Masters up against newcomer Meriel Barham. The songs are distinct here but Pale Saints lost none of its original charm. Masters broke ranks with the band completely after its release (forming Spoonfed Hybrid in the process). Barham took over completely, not altering Pale Saints' traditional sound but drawing innumerable comparisons to her old band Lush in the album Slow Buildings. [jason]
